The ScienceJam competition, where market-oriented scientific projects compete against each other, has entered its second season. Just like last year, we opened it this year with the ScienceJam Hackathon on October 13 and 14. At the hackathon, which took place from 3:00 p.m. on Thursday to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, with a break for a night’s rest in between, the participating students solved one of two challenges given to them by Krka, d.d., and the Jo\u017eef \u0160tefan Institute. Krka’s challenge was related to biochemistry and was called ‘Usability of products with B vitamins’. The challenge of the Jo\u017eef \u0160tefan Institute was of a more technological nature and was called ‘Integration of portable sensors for air quality’.<\/p>

The students had lectures and workshops in two very tiring days. The first day was dedicated to getting to know the scientific literature related to the challenges and the nature of science in general. Together with dr. Katerina Bo\u017ei\u010d they learned how to search for scientific literature and how to visualize the found data bibliometrically. Most of the time was spent in groups where they could read the given scientific literature. The IJS mentors were Dr. David Kocman and Dr. Rok Novak, and Krka\u2019s mentors were, dr. Maja Kincl Skube and M.Sc. Lucia Hvalec.<\/p>

The second day was devoted to market research and final presentations, which was done with the help of mentors from the Novo mesto Development Center. Mr. Aleksej Metelko led them through market research with lectures and mentoring. The participants, with the information obtained in the scientific literature and insights into the state of the market, then with the help of Mr. Simon Jeraj saw how to prepare presentations for the panel of jurors. Before the final presentations, the teams did a trial pitch session with Mrs. Anja Jak\u0161e and M.Sc. Janez Gorenc, where they got information about possible improvements. At exactly 14:00, we started with the presentations, where 40 students in 9 teams presented their research results and the concept of a possible solution with which they could one day enter the market. The participants were always supported by their school mentors, teachers at their schools, who introduced the hackathon to them and invited them to participate.<\/p>

There were no first, second, or third place winners at the hackathon, as the goal of the ScienceJam Hackathon is not to compete, but to learn about the nature of science and entrepreneurship. So the participants went home with feedback on their research and work at the hackathon and full of new knowledge. According to the satisfaction survey, the participants were very satisfied with all the activities at the hackathon, and they also gave very good suggestions for improvements in future hackathon implementations.<\/p>

Of course, ScienceJam Hackathon is not the first event of this kind for the development of key competences of lifelong learning of young people, which is organized at the Novo mesto Development Center. We started with market-oriented science already in 2019, 2020, and 2021, when we directed some youth entrepreneurial teams to work on their scientific research product. In October last year, we held the first scientific-entrepreneurial hackathon and thus opened the way to the competition of market-oriented scientific projects of young people, ScienceJam. From the first beginnings in October 2021 to the finals of the ScienceJam competition in May 2022, many competition concepts were written and discarded before arriving at the design we have now. ScienceJam is therefore a competition of scientific projects that have market potential at the very start. The research paper submitted by the teams in the first round of the competition must describe both the scientific research and the business model with which the teams intend to penetrate the market once their product is sufficiently developed. Both parts of the research assignment can get the same number of points.<\/p>

In the new season, we connected with two scientific Olympiads abroad, VILIPO from Vilnius, Lithuania, and the International Greenwich Olympiad in London. The first one will be held live in 2022-2023 after years of lockdowns due to COVID-19, so the two best student teams from the ScienceJam 2023 final will travel to Vilnius. This year, ScienceJam is also expanding to the student population.<\/p>

With the ScienceJam competition in Slovenia, we are trying to help connect researchers with different companies and present them with entrepreneurship as one of the key competencies.
